History of the West Highland White Terrier

The West Highland White Terrier's origins lie in the Scottish Highlands, where they were bred to hunt vermin, particularly rodents and foxes. The breed is closely related to other Scottish terriers like the Cairn Terrier, Scottish Terrier, and Dandie Dinmont Terrier.

The white coat was specifically selected to distinguish the dogs from the quarry they were hunting, preventing accidental shootings during hunts. According to legend, Colonel Edward Donald Malcolm of Poltalloch is credited with developing the white breed after a reddish-brown terrier of his was mistakenly shot.

The breed gained popularity in the early 20th century and was officially recognized by the Kennel Club in 1907. Since then, Westies have become beloved pets around the world, cherished for their endearing personalities and distinctive appearance.
