Introduction to the Kooikerhondje

The Kooikerhondje is a small, sporty Dutch breed originally bred to lure ducks into traps, called "kooien" (hence the name). These charming dogs are known for their intelligence, agility, and affectionate nature, making them wonderful companions for active families. They are relatively rare outside of the Netherlands, adding to their unique appeal.

Kooikers are characterized by their elegant appearance, featuring a distinctive orange-red and white coat, feathered tail, and black-tipped ears known as "earrings." They possess a playful and curious personality, enjoying activities such as agility, retrieving, and spending time with their loved ones. Their alert nature also makes them good watchdogs.

History of the Kooikerhondje

The Kooikerhondje has a rich history in the Netherlands, dating back to the 16th century. They were primarily used to lure ducks into traps for hunters, a skill that required both intelligence and agility. Their bright, waving tail was particularly useful in attracting the ducks' attention.

During World War II, the breed nearly became extinct. However, Baroness van Hardenbroek van Ammerstol dedicated herself to saving the Kooikerhondje. In 1967, the breed was officially recognized by the Raad van Beheer, the Dutch Kennel Club, ensuring its preservation for future generations.

Today, the Kooikerhondje is gaining popularity as a companion animal while still retaining its working instincts. Breeders are focused on maintaining the breed's health, temperament, and unique characteristics, ensuring that the Kooikerhondje remains a delightful and versatile breed.
