Introduction to the Chinese Crested
The Chinese Crested is a unique and captivating toy breed known for its distinctive appearance and playful personality. They come in two varieties: the Hairless, with smooth, soft skin and hair only on the head (crest), feet (socks), and tail (plume); and the Powderpuff, covered in a soft, double coat.
Despite their delicate appearance, Chinese Cresteds are surprisingly athletic and enjoy playing games and spending time with their families. They are intelligent and eager to please, making them relatively easy to train. They are affectionate, sensitive dogs who thrive on human companionship and can be prone to separation anxiety if left alone for extended periods.
History of the Chinese Crested
Despite the name, the exact origins of the Chinese Crested are debated, but it's believed they originated in Africa and were then refined by the Chinese. Hairless dogs have existed throughout history, and the Chinese likely bred down larger hairless breeds to create the elegant toy dog we know today.
Chinese Cresteds were used as ratters on ships and traded throughout the world. They gained popularity in the West in the 20th century thanks to breeders and enthusiasts who worked to establish the breed. The American Kennel Club officially recognized the Chinese Crested in 1991.
