Introduction to the Cesky Terrier

The Cesky Terrier, also known as the Bohemian Terrier, is a small, well-muscled dog originally bred in Czechoslovakia. They are known for their cheerful disposition and loyalty to their families, making them excellent companions. Cesky Terriers are relatively rare, but their unique appearance and gentle temperament make them a desirable breed for those seeking a less common terrier.

These dogs possess a distinctive, semi-long coat that requires regular grooming. They are intelligent and eager to please, which makes them relatively easy to train. While they have a typical terrier tenacity, they are generally calmer and less excitable than some of their terrier cousins.

History of the Cesky Terrier

The Cesky Terrier was created in 1948 by František Horák, a Czech breeder. His goal was to develop a terrier suitable for hunting vermin in the forests of Bohemia. Horák crossed a Sealyham Terrier with a Scottish Terrier to achieve the desired characteristics. He carefully selected for traits such as a lower hunting drive than other terriers as well as an easy to groom coat.

The breed quickly gained popularity in Czechoslovakia, and in 1963, it was officially recognized by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI). Cesky Terriers were first imported to the United States in the 1980s and gained AKC recognition in 2011.

Today, the Cesky Terrier remains relatively rare, but dedicated breeders around the world are working to preserve and promote this unique and charming breed.
