Australian Labradoodle

Wally Conron of the Royal Guide Dog Association of Australia crossed a Labrador Retriever with a Standard Poodle in an attempt to find a suitable guide dog for a visually impaired woman whose husband was allergic to dogs.

While the initial cross produced some allergy-friendly dogs, the breed's development continued through strategic crosses with other breeds, including Irish Water Spaniels, American Cocker Spaniels, and English Cocker Spaniels. This multi-generational breeding approach aimed to refine the breed's characteristics, including coat type, temperament, and overall health.

The Australian Labradoodle is still considered a developing breed, with breeders working to establish consistent traits and a reliable pedigree. While not yet fully recognized by all major kennel clubs, the breed's popularity continues to grow, driven by its desirable qualities and its suitability for families with allergies.
