Instructions for Cat Urine Removal
Step 1: Initial Cleaning
If your cat just urinated on the carpet, quickly soak it up:
- Use paper towels to absorb as much urine as possible. Lay multiple layers and step on them.
- Replace with dry towels until no more liquid is absorbed.
- A wet/dry vacuum cleaner can help remove remaining urine.
For dried urine, use a black light to find stains or simply follow your nose to detect the smell.
Step 2: Vinegar Solution
- Spray the area with a 50:50 solution of white vinegar and water.
- Ensure the mixture penetrates deep into the carpet fibers.
- Blot with paper towels to absorb moisture. Use a wet/dry vacuum if available.
Step 3: Final Steps
- Apply baking soda over the stained area.
- Mix a quarter cup of 3% hydrogen peroxide with a teaspoon of dish soap and apply it over the baking soda.
- Work the mixture into the carpet with a soft brush or your fingers (wear rubber gloves).
- Let it dry and then vacuum up the dried baking soda.
Note: Use only 3% hydrogen peroxide to avoid bleaching.
Important Considerations
Cats might re-offend if they smell their urine. Remove the odor completely to prevent this. Also, avoid ammonia-based products, as they can encourage cats to return to the same spot.
Additional Information
Consider products like SSScat to keep cats away from problem areas. Ensure medical conditions aren't causing inappropriate urination by consulting a vet. Clean litter trays regularly and keep them in quiet locations, away from food and water.
