What is "In Heat"?

Oestrus, often called "In Heat," is when a female cat can mate. It's a part of her reproductive cycle.

When Does a Cat First Come Into Heat?

Cats typically come into heat between 4 to 10 months old. This time varies, but the average is around six months. Some breeds like Siamese and Burmese may start as early as 4 months.

Signs That Your Cat is In Heat

  • Your cat may become more affectionate than usual.
  • She might roll on the floor.
  • She'll often carry her tail to one side.
  • Increased meowing or "calling" is common and can be very noisy.
  • She may assume a position with her front on the ground and her bottom up.
  • The hind legs might "tread."
  • She could lick her vulval area more often.
  • Facial rubbing against objects or people increases.
  • Patting her back near the tail might make her raise her bottom.
  • If usually kept inside, she may try to escape outside.

Duration and Frequency of Heat

Oestrus lasts 7 to 10 days. If not mated, your cat will come into heat every 2 to 3 weeks. Unmated cycles increase risks like cancer and pyometra.

Prevention of Heat

Prevent heat by spaying your cat before 6 months or as advised by your vet.

Managing a Cat in Heat

To avoid unwanted pregnancy, keep her indoors and consider spaying even if she's in heat. Be aware of higher spaying costs during this time.
