Understanding Catnip

Catnip, scientifically known as Nepeta cataria, is a herb from the mint family. People sometimes call it catmint. This plant has jagged, heart-shaped leaves and small white flowers speckled with purple.

The smell of catnip is similar to mint, and it is a perennial, which means it lives for more than two years. The main ingredient in catnip is an oil called nepetalactone, found in the plant's leaves.

Effects of Catnip on Cats

Many cat owners describe their pets' reaction to catnip as if they're getting "high." Nepetalactone can cause hallucinations. Affected cats might rub, lick, sniff, or even eat the plant. These interactions often lead to behavioral changes.

Common Reactions:

  • Intoxicated or drunken behavior
  • Rolling on the ground
  • Euphoria and excitement
  • Drooling
  • Hyperactive or playful actions
  • Increased meowing
  • Sometimes, sedation or aggression

Do All Cats React to Catnip?

Surprisingly, catnip affects only about half of all cats. The rest don't react at all. Also, it doesn't affect kittens less than 12 weeks old.

Why the Difference?

It seems to be in their genes. Cats either inherit the gene that makes them sensitive to catnip or they don't.

Is Catnip Safe?

Yes, catnip is non-toxic and non-addictive. It's safe even if cats eat it, but the smell is what actually triggers a response. Eating alone won't cause a reaction.

Where to Find Catnip

You can buy a catnip plant from a nursery or get seeds to grow your own. Pet stores also sell various catnip products like dried catnip, toys, sprays, and pillows.

Catnip and Big Cats

Interestingly, large cats like bobcats, lynxes, tigers, and lions can be affected by catnip, too.

Other Uses for Catnip

The active ingredient, nepetalactone, also works as an insect repellent against mosquitoes and cockroaches.

For humans, catnip can help with colds, flu, and sleep due to its soothing effects. It might aid in calming the stomach and relieving diarrhea and nausea. It has even been used for colic and anxiety in children.
